Oven Repair

When your Whirlpool oven stops heating, it’s usually the result of a faulty component within your appliance. The best way to find the culprit is to check all the main components with a multimeter. Therefore, you will need to call a technician if you don’t have a multimeter.

This guide covers all major Whirlpool gas and electric ovens, including the following model numbers:

Is the power supply working?

The best place to start is to check the power supply. This applies to both electric and gas ovens. Electric ovens need 240 volts of alternating current to heat correctly, while gas ovens require 120 volts of alternating current.

This is how to check the power supply:

  1. Start by making sure the power socket isn’t defective. This can be done by plugging your oven into a different socket and checking if it turns on and heats properly. If it works, the original socket will need replacing.
  2. If the oven doesn’t turn on and heat using a different socket, check the power socket to ensure it has the correct voltage. If faulty, repair or replace the socket. Only people with relevant experience should carry out this repair.

Is the igniter working?

If you have an electric oven, skip ahead to the ‘Is the Bake Element Working?’ section. If you have a gas-powered oven, we will show you how to check the igniter, broil spark electrode, and safety valve. If any are faulty, they will need to be repaired or replaced.

Start by checking the igniter. This can be done by:

  1. Locate the igniter.
  2. Try to turn your oven on. If the igniter doesn’t ignite the gas, it will need checking with a multimeter for continuity. However, you should turn the gas supply off first.
  3. If faulty, replace it. If working, check the next component.
  4. Once replaced, make sure your Whirlpool oven is working properly. If not, check the next component.

Is the broil spark electrode working?

The spark electrode helps to ignite the flame so your Whirlpool oven can heat. Therefore, when it becomes defective, your oven won’t be able to heat.

Follow these steps to check the spark electrode:

  1. Locate the spark electrode.
  2. Switch the gas supply off.
  3. Test the spark electrode with a multimeter to ensure it has continuity.
  4. If faulty, replace it. If working, move on to check the next component.
  5. Once replaced, make sure your Whirlpool oven is working properly. If not, move on to check the next component.

Is the safety valve working?

The gas safety valve opens to provide gas so the flame can ignite. If faulty, your Whirlpool oven won’t be able to heat.

This is how to check the safety valve:

  1. Locate the safety valve.
  2. Switch the gas supply off.
  3. Test the safety valve with a multimeter to ensure it has continuity.
  4. If faulty, replace it. If working, check the next component.
  5. Once replaced, make sure your Whirlpool oven is working properly. If not, check the next component.

Is the bake element working?

You need to check the bake element if you have an electric oven. The element is the main component that heats your oven. If it becomes faulty, your oven won’t be able to heat.

This is how to check the bake element:

  1. If your bake element has a cover over it, remove it.
  2. Turn your oven on to bake at the highest heat setting.
  3. Check if the element is bright red. If so, move on to the next component.
  4. If the element doesn’t turn bright red, turn your oven off.
  5. Once cool, disconnect the heating element and check it with a multimeter for continuity.
  6. If faulty, replace it. If working, move on to check the next component.
  7. Once replaced, make sure your Whirlpool oven is working properly. If not, move on and check the next component.

Is the thermal fuse working?

The next component to check is the thermal fuse. The purpose of the thermal fuse is to monitor the temperature in your oven. If it overheats, it tells the main control board to turn your oven off. If it becomes defective, your oven won’t heat properly or may turn off when it shouldn’t.

This is how to check the thermal fuse:

  1. Locate the thermal fuse.
  2. Disconnect and remove it from your oven.
  3. Test the thermal fuse with a multimeter to ensure it has continuity.
  4. If faulty, replace it. If working, check the next component.
  5. Once replaced, make sure your Whirlpool oven is working properly. If not, check the next component.

Is the relay board faulty?

Some Whirlpool ovens have a relay board (check your user manual to determine if your oven does). The relay board helps control the electrical current sent to the heating element. If faulty, your oven won’t heat.

This is how to check the relay board:

  1. Locate the relay board.
  2. Test each of the individual relays with a multimeter to ensure they have continuity.
  3. If any are faulty, replace the relay board. If working correctly, check the next component.
  4. Once replaced, make sure your Whirlpool oven is working properly. If not, check the next component.

Is the main control board faulty?

Your final option is replacing your Whirlpool oven’s main control board. The control board can’t be repaired, so replacing it is your only option. Before replacing the control board, consider calling a technician to come and inspect your appliance, as replacing the main control board isn’t guaranteed to work and can be quite expensive.
